This blog is really about our kids, Jacqui and Kyle:

Jacqui is a wonderfully energetic and opinionated six-year-old. She was born with a rare birth defect known as a lymphatic malformation (LM) and has been through a lot in her young life. She had a trach until she was a year old, had surgery in New York to remove her LM with world renowned surgeon, Dr. Milton Waner (at age three), and still has a G-tube. Jacqui is a bright sunny soul in spite of everything.

Kyle is a thoughtful, and slightly reserved two-year-old with a magical giggle and a wise-looking smile. He is clever and charming and a bundle of pure joy.

Our goal as parents: To treasure every moment and to raise our children to be extraordinary individuals.

Welcome to an inside view of our world!

Picky Eater’s Club — August 2008 Edition

August 14, 2008

Picky Eaters Club

Share a success story from the past month, a new tip or trick you’ve picked up… or as always, feel free to make a desperate plea for help. ;)

(For information about Picky Eater’s Club, click here.)

Wow. Where did July go? Where did August go? It’s already time for another Picky Eater’s and I’m sooooooo not ready for it this month. Want to know why? Well I’ll let you in on a little secret … I don’t have all the answers. Nope. Never have. Lately, Kyle has been pushing mealtimes to the absolute limit and I soooooooo want to throw in the towel. But I won’t. I can’t.

Kyle’s Latest Spoon-Blocking Technique

Parenthood involves a lot of things that at times make me long for a month in my very own little padded soundproof room, but it involves a lot of other things too. Wonderful things. Things I’ve been trying very hard to remember as I hose off the highchair on the back deck along with Kyle’s soup-splattered T-shirt that I peeled off of him before bedtime.

The other day, while Kyle shrieked his way through lunch, I pondered to myself what insights I could possibly offer to you this month, given the fact that at that particular moment, the two of us were pretty much covered head-to-toe in Ravioli and cottage cheese. I began doodling on one of Jacqui’s sheets of drawing paper and I suddenly had an answer…

(The above drawing is a spoof on this poster)

Never give up … and never lose your sense of humor. I have to believe this will all be quite funny some day. Seriously. I have to. For the sake of my own sanity.

What About You? What picky eater tips or questions do you have? I’m looking forward to hearing them!

Great advice! “Never give up.” There was an article in Newsweek this week that made me think about you…

I have no advice, only commiserations!!

I recently blogged that my 2yo, Audrey, would happily live on my homemade rice milk, candy, and gluten-free pretzels, if I let her. But, last night, we had takeout from Pei Wei, which has a gluten-free menu, and she ate a whole 8 oz bowl of g.f. sweet & sour chicken — rice, sauce, chicken (dusted w/ potato starch), and pineapple. The whole thing. I was *thrilled*. So… is there a Pei Wei near you?? http://www.peiwei.com

I haven’t given up! I have a block as to what to write this month, too. We aren’t any further than we were last month. The menu: chicken fries, bread, pizza, and peanut butter sandwiches. That’s it! It’s so very frustrating! :-w

I may think of something later and come back to link up.

    I love your drawing!

No advice from over here. My two picky eaters still try my patience.

That spoon-blocking technique looks effective! I get so tired of trying to see what food my baby will eventually deign to eat, exhausting all my options!

:) I think the best thing was introducing the new foods with the old ones. Sneaking food in when possible works wonders. I love adding veggies to standard mac and cheese. Pureed cauliflower, carrots yams work best. I blogged about this a week ago. Great blog!

Umm what day am I supposed to be doing this or have I already missed it?

I had a post it note to remind me about this one but it’s been buried.

I should be able to offer some staggeringly insightful help but……

Love the cartoon. I may have no choice but to steal it!

We are currently at 17 ‘foods’ and holding.

    Let me think……
I know, how about you try this recipe =
one box of brownie mix [no pudge whatever it’s called from Trader Joes]
one box of frozen spinach thawed
Whizz together in Magimix with however much yoghourt is directed on the packet [memory lapse]. Bake according to instructions, cool and cut into 10 one inch cubes [or there about]

Each one they eat means that they are consuming one ounce of spinach.

Yes you doubt me. They’re moist, yummy and you cannot taste the spinach.
    Cheers

Ooo that would be Cuisinart of course!
